We survived the night at slab city.
Today we will end up in San Diego. At Salton sea we are pretty far south and kinda close to the SD but i’,m not driving that way because the drive is along the boarder and I’m not i the mood to be stopped and searched at every inspection station because the van is from out of state with weird locks and windows cages or because the drug dog thinks it smells something. So we took the long detoured route back up north to I-10 then down on I-15. Post thanksgiving day tradition we listened to Christmas music on the drive down. There’s something really wrong about listening to Christmas music with the windows down in a tee shirt. California knows nothing of the winter wonderland. It feels really fake and lame.
It’s pop culture Friday today folks. We checked out 2 places along the SD journey that are ingredients from my pop culture past. The first one was a big deal to me in the 80′s. 3 appearances in movies and TV throughout my childhood in grained this roadside attraction into my psyche. When planning the road trip this was one of the first places I mapped along the route. Cabazon Dinosaurs along I-10. I mean come on, Pee-wees big adventure, The Game Wizard (Fred Savage and Super Mario 3 debut), and “Everybody wants to rule the world” music video by Tears for Fears. This place is a big deal.

Next pop culture stop was the infamous In and Out Burger.
Driving on our way south, for the first time this trip, we passed at least 10 California highway patrol motorcycle officers giving out tickets. In true pop culture Friday form, TV show CHIPS anyone??
We got to Mikes house early. he lives in the La Mesa suburb of San Diego in a fancy little house with friends. He’s living the live. Got himself a car and everything. We waited for him to get off work them he took us to grab a bite to eat at a delicious Mexican spot in the city. Next we went to Pacific ocean. Stepping out the car we could instantly smell the salt water in the air. A flood of memories and a sense of home washed over us. The connection between your sense of smell and feeling of happiness is an amazing thing. The Pacific has been a undeclared victory destination since the beginning of the trip. Not until we got there id we realize. Suddenly we felt accomplished. We did it! We made it out of the inner US and have reached our new home on our new coast. The salty air welcomes and calms us. It’s a beautiful thing. We walked along the beach at night and off onto the pier. It was beautiful. From there mike took us to a middle eastern spot for some dessert treats. Then we went back to his place whirr we forced him almost at knife point to view the pictures on the blog. Tired from the lack of sleep the night before worrying about being robbed we went to bed early, around 9. Tomorrow and Sunday we’ll rage!
